What is EcoMap?

EcoMap is a not-for-profit project founded by leading academics and industry professionals, that sources company-reported environmental emissions data and converts these to financial terms to make bottom-up climate risk analysis understandable and actionable.

Raw Environmental Data

MSCI ESG Research LLC, a leading provider of ESG research and data, provides EcoMap with raw environmental emissions for ~20,000 companies.

Financial Translation

EcoMap transforms emissions data into monetary terms using methodologies aligned with IFVI, combining it with financials to calculate financial climate risk exposure.

Completely Free for Everyone

The financial climate risk is aggregated on multiple levels and published as analyses on the EcoMap data platform, making it free and accessible for everyone.

"EcoMap makes it easier to turn environmental risks into financial insights, simplifying how industries and companies are analyzed worldwide. It's great for identifying sectors where environmental costs might affect future profitability and finding opportunities to act on."

Jacqueline af Ugglas — EQT Director and Ex Morgan Stanley Investment Banker

"Integrating impact accounting with financial information provides a clearer picture of a company's full contribution to people and the planet. By including environmental externalities and other non-financial metrics, capital allocators can uncover future risks and opportunities, enabling more informed decisions that drive long-term resilience and strategic advantage."

Andrea Serra — Chief Market Development Officer at IFVI

"Environmental costs are hidden liabilities on every company's balance sheet. The gap between reported EBITDA and climate-adjusted EBITDA represents perhaps the most significant blind spot in modern financial analysis."

Dan Le — Initiator, EcoMap

"By financial corporate climate risks and publishing them free from commercial influence, EcoMap provides businesses, investors, regulators and policymakers with sound environmental footprint data translated into a common language—monetary terms—enabling these impacts to be addressed within the financial frameworks decision-makers use on a daily basis."

Kaja Dahl Johnsen — Initiator, EcoMap

"EcoMap demonstrates that the societal cost of climate change is not just environmental, it's also financial, and its scale is staggering. Businesses that fail to address these costs risk falling behind in a rapidly changing economic landscape"

Gunnar S. Eskeland — Professor of Resource and Environmental Economics

"We are pleased to contribute data to help underpin EcoMap's innovative initiative. By leveraging academic methodologies to put external costs into monetary terms, EcoMap offers a holistic view to stakeholders who want to evaluate companies' impacts alongside financial performance."

Linda-Eling Lee — Founding Director and Head of the MSCI Sustainability Institute

"The EcoMap team has a remarkable vision: making environmental data intuitive and freely accessible for everyone. By empowering non government organisations, businesses, and other stakeholders with transparent and actionable insights, they are laying the groundwork for smarter, more collaborative decisions that drive sustainable progress"

John Knight — Global Reporting Initiative

"EcoMap's timing is perfect, given the complexity of carbon, biodiversity and other related issues, the proliferation of often complicated compliance and voluntary standards, and the failure of market mechanisms to value climate impacts. This tool connects sustainability and financial metrics and attributes economic value to climate initiatives enabling decision makers to deliver superior financial returns, reduce risk, increase resiliency and long-term competitiveness and productivity, and drive down the cost of capital and debt, benefitting all stakeholders and the planet."

Richard Blundell — Professor at University of Toronto

"EcoMap is pioneering in making society aware of the actual costs that companies and industries impose on the climate and the environment, which will be crucial if we are to address the environmental challenges and achieve real change."

Bjørn Malm — CFO at Høine AS

"EcoMap is an exciting way for society to understand the true cost of our products and services not just for today, but for tomorrow as well. By making these costs visible, EcoMap aims to pave the road for innovation to reduce those costs now so we have a better tomorrow."

Arvind Gupta — Founder of IndieBio and Partner at Mayfield

"If you know the price of carbon, you know impact valuation. If you don't know where to go from there, look up Ecomap."

Dennis West — Researcher at University of Oxford

"Business leaders or decision makers now have access to a transparent platform to address such unsustainable activities and track decarbonisation progress, currently severely lagging behind adopted objectives, under independent and public scrutiny."

Yann Robiou du Pont — Researcher at Utrecht University
